Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Throughout college, Dr. Ruhrkraut had been interested in the field of medicine until he decided to switch gears and focus more on dentistry. This was due to his participation in a mission trip to Honduras in 2011, where he assisted a dentist there and resumed shadowing him back in the United States. After learning much more about the wonderful opportunities that dentistry offered while also helping to improve a patient’s overall quality of life, he set himself to pursue a life as a dentist!
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Ruhrkraut attended The Ohio State University for his bachelor’s degree before studying at their College of Dentistry to earn his dental doctorate. Throughout his years as a general dentist, he’s enjoyed the flexibility it’s given him to provide a holistic plan and various treatments to his patients. He’s worked in multiple offices in New York City and Los Angeles, and he’s gained extensive knowledge and skills in multiple types of services, including root canals, crowns and bridges, dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, and Invisalign. He also regularly seeks continuing education to remain on top of the latest advancements in dentistry, and he’s also an active member of the American Dental Association and New York Dental Association.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Aside from treating pearly whites, Dr. Ruhrkraut loves to return to his hometown of Cleveland, OH to visit his parents and loved ones several times a year whenever he gets the chance. Away from the office, he enjoys cooking, reading, watching movies, playing volleyball, and traveling. One fun fact about him: he’s an Eagle Scout and received the Triple Crown Award after canoeing, hiking, camping, and sailing in three national high adventure programs.

Professional Teeth Whitening NYC
It’s no secret that surface stains can take away from your beautiful smile. Things like food, wine, age, and smoking can discolor your teeth and diminish your self-confidence. However, our teeth whitening services can help restore your smile and give you the confidence boost you need to take on anything life throws your way.
Our non-invasive teeth whitening process makes troublesome stains and discoloration a thing of the past, giving you healthier, whiter teeth in just one hour. We utilize an Opalescence Boost whitening gel that brightens teeth safely, swiftly, and efficiently. Unlike other whitening treatments, the Opalescence Boost process is clinically proven to whiten teeth and won’t harm your lips, gums, or enamel.
How To Maintain a Bright Smile After Teeth Whitening
Although professional teeth whitening will brighten up your smile, you must continue to maintain your teeth if you want lasting results. However, many patients don’t know how to maintain their teeth correctly. Preserving whitened teeth is easy and doesn’t require you to drastically adjust your daily routine.
Follow the oral hygiene tips below to maintain your lush, bright smile.
- Avoid nicotine products like cigarettes and chewing tobacco
- Reduce coffee, red wine, and tea consumption
- Try to avoid dark foods like sauces and berries
- Eat saliva-producing foods like apples, carrots, and strawberries to eliminate stain causers
- Swish water after drinking or eating to remove potential stain causers
Also, you must brush your teeth after every snack and meal to maintain whitened teeth. If you have sensitive teeth, use a soft-bristled toothbrush and moderately abrasive toothpaste for the best results.
It’s also important to note that some toothpaste can damage or scratch dental restorations. Try using a soft water-based toothpaste that will wash away unwanted acids and restore mineral content. Our dental experts can recommend several kinds of toothpaste and toothbrushes that will keep your smile bright and healthy for years to come.
Understanding Tooth Discoloration and Oral Health
Tooth discoloration is a common issue that affects many people. It can make us feel self-conscious about our smiles. Good oral hygiene plays a big role in keeping teeth white and healthy.
Causes of Discolored Teeth
Many things can cause our teeth to lose their bright white color. What we eat and drink often leads to stains. Coffee, tea, and red wine are common culprits. Smoking is another big cause of yellow teeth.
Some medications can also change tooth color. As we get older, our teeth naturally darken too. Tiny cracks in the enamel let stains seep in over time.
Injuries to teeth sometimes cause discoloration. Poor brushing habits allow plaque to build up, which can make teeth look yellow. Some people are also born with thinner enamel, making their teeth look darker.
Role of Oral Hygiene in Whitening
Good oral care is key for whiter teeth. We need to brush at least twice a day with whitening toothpaste. Flossing daily helps remove stains between teeth.
Regular dental cleanings are important too. They remove tough stains and tartar buildup. Dentists can spot early signs of decay that may cause discoloration.
Avoiding staining foods and drinks helps keep teeth white. If we do have them, we should rinse our mouths after. Using a straw for dark drinks can also help.
At-home whitening products work best when teeth are clean. We offer professional whitening treatments that are even more effective on healthy teeth.
The Science Behind Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening involves chemical reactions that break down stains on tooth surfaces. We’ll explore how hydrogen peroxide works on enamel and affects the inner dentin layer.
Hydrogen Peroxide and Its Effects on Tooth Enamel
Hydrogen peroxide is the key ingredient in most teeth whitening products. It’s a powerful oxidizing agent that penetrates the enamel. When it comes into contact with stains, it breaks them down into smaller, less visible molecules.
This process makes teeth look whiter and brighter. Professional treatments at our NYC clinic use higher concentrations of hydrogen peroxide for faster, more dramatic results.
At-home whitening kits also use hydrogen peroxide, but in lower strengths. These take longer to work but are gentler on sensitive teeth.
Dentin: The Inner Layer of Teeth
While enamel is the outer layer of teeth, dentin lies beneath it. Dentin is naturally yellow and can show through thin or translucent enamel. This affects the overall tooth color.
Whitening treatments can penetrate the enamel to reach the dentin layer. They lighten both the enamel and dentin for a more thorough whitening effect.
Some people may experience temporary tooth sensitivity during this process. This happens as the hydrogen peroxide reaches the nerves in the dentin layer.
At Lux Smiles NYC, we offer professional treatments that minimize sensitivity while maximizing results. Our dentists, Dr. Khalife and Dr. Leonetti, can recommend the best option for your needs.
Protecting Your Smile: Addressing Tooth Sensitivity and Whitening Results
Tooth sensitivity and maintaining whitening results are key concerns after teeth whitening. We’ll explore effective ways to manage discomfort and keep your smile bright.
Handling Sensitivity During and After Whitening
Tooth sensitivity is common after whitening treatments. We recommend using toothpaste made for sensitive teeth to help ease discomfort. Brushing gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush can also reduce irritation.
Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks for a few days after whitening. This gives your teeth time to adjust. If sensitivity persists, we might suggest fluoride treatments to strengthen enamel.
Some patients find relief by applying a small amount of sensitive toothpaste directly to sore spots before bed. Leave it on overnight for best results.
Maintaining Whitening Results for the Long Term
To keep your smile bright, good oral hygiene is crucial. We suggest brushing twice daily and flossing once a day. Using a whitening toothpaste can help maintain results between professional treatments.
Limit foods and drinks that stain teeth, like coffee, tea, and red wine. When you do enjoy these, rinse your mouth with water afterward. Drinking through a straw can also help prevent staining.
Regular dental check-ups and cleanings at our NYC office are vital for long-lasting whiteness. We can touch up your whitening as needed and catch any issues early.
Consider using a straw when drinking beverages that might stain your teeth. This helps the liquid bypass your front teeth, reducing the risk of discoloration.
