What Is BOTOX?
Botox is a neuromodulator made from a purified form of botulinum toxin. We use it to temporarily relax facial muscles that cause wrinkles. The treatment is quick, usually taking only 10-15 minutes in our office.
Botox works by blocking nerve signals to targeted muscles. This reduces muscle activity that leads to lines and wrinkles. The effects typically last 3-4 months before a touch-up is needed.
We carefully place small amounts of Botox in specific facial areas. Common treatment spots include forehead lines, crow’s feet, and frown lines between the eyebrows.
BOTOX also has some medical applications. For example, our team can use it to reduce the pain and muscle spasms that are commonly associated with TMJ disorder (TMD).
Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX?
You might be a good candidate for cosmetic BOTOX injections if you are at least in your late 20s and wish to reduce the appearance of issues like crow’s feet, forehead lines, lines between the eyebrows, and smoker’s lines around the lips. (Even if you are not yet in your late 20s, some people choose to get BOTOX earlier as a preventive measure.)
Before approving you for BOTOX, our team will take a thorough medical history to ensure that it is an appropriate treatment for your goals and circumstances.
The Benefits of BOTOX
Some of the most noteworthy benefits of BOTOX include:
- Fast treatment. A series of BOTOX injections usually takes just 20 – 60 minutes.
- Results are quickly noticeable. It can take about 2 weeks for the results of treatment to take full effect.
- It looks natural. Precise BOTOX injections will not make your face look frozen or unnatural. You will simply look younger!
- The results can last for months. For most patients, retreatment is recommended every 3 – 6 months.
- BOTOX is cost-effective. Compared to more invasive cosmetic procedures, BOTOX is quite affordable.

After completing his bachelor’s degree at the University of Rhode Island, Dr. Leonetti attended the Rutgers School of Dental Medicine in New Jersey and went on to complete his General Practice Residency at Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine in Manhattan, New York. He joined us at the Tribeca location in 2016 and has expanded with us to the SoHo Dental Group.
Continuing Education
Dr. Leonetti performs various types of general dentistry for patients of all ages including restorative and preventative care, root canal therapy, Invisalign orthodontics, and gum surgery.
In his studies at the Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine, he focused on cosmetic procedures and implant dentistry. Dr. Leonetti continues to advance his skills every year so he can provide his patients with impeccable care, an activity he is passionate about.

Keep reading to learn more about his background and education.
Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?
Throughout college, Dr. Ruhrkraut had been interested in the field of medicine until he decided to switch gears and focus more on dentistry. This was due to his participation in a mission trip to Honduras in 2011, where he assisted a dentist there and resumed shadowing him back in the United States. After learning much more about the wonderful opportunities that dentistry offered while also helping to improve a patient’s overall quality of life, he set himself to pursue a life as a dentist!
Where Did You Study Dentistry?
Dr. Ruhrkraut attended The Ohio State University for his bachelor’s degree before studying at their College of Dentistry to earn his dental doctorate. Throughout his years as a general dentist, he’s enjoyed the flexibility it’s given him to provide a holistic plan and various treatments to his patients. He’s worked in multiple offices in New York City and Los Angeles, and he’s gained extensive knowledge and skills in multiple types of services, including root canals, crowns and bridges, dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, and Invisalign. He also regularly seeks continuing education to remain on top of the latest advancements in dentistry, and he’s also an active member of the American Dental Association and New York Dental Association.
Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?
Aside from treating pearly whites, Dr. Ruhrkraut loves to return to his hometown of Cleveland, OH to visit his parents and loved ones several times a year whenever he gets the chance. Away from the office, he enjoys cooking, reading, watching movies, playing volleyball, and traveling. One fun fact about him: he’s an Eagle Scout and received the Triple Crown Award after canoeing, hiking, camping, and sailing in three national high adventure programs.

Botox Treatment Areas and Techniques
Botox injections target specific facial muscles to smooth wrinkles and fine lines. We offer treatments for many popular areas and use advanced methods for best results.
Popular Facial Regions for Botox Injections
We often use Botox to treat crow’s feet around the eyes. These tiny wrinkles can make you look older. Frown lines between the eyebrows are another common spot. We call these the “11’s” because they look like the number 11.
Forehead lines are a top concern for many of our NYC patients. Botox helps smooth these horizontal creases. Some people get bunny lines on the sides of their nose when they smile. We can soften those too.
The glabellar area between and above the eyebrows is great for Botox. It helps with both frown lines and forehead wrinkles. We also do brow lifts with Botox to open up the eye area.
Advanced Botox Techniques
We use special methods to get natural-looking results. The “lip flip” is a popular technique. We inject tiny amounts above the upper lip to give a subtle lift.
Micro-Botox involves very small doses in the skin’s surface. This can improve skin texture and reduce oil. We sometimes combine Botox with fillers for better outcomes.
Careful placement is key. We map out injection points to target the right muscles. This helps avoid a “frozen” look. Our doctors stay up-to-date on the newest Botox methods.
The Botox Procedure at Lux Smiles
At Lux Smiles, we offer personalized Botox treatments to help our patients achieve a refreshed appearance. Our expert team uses advanced techniques to ensure safe and effective results.
Initial Consultation and Personalization
We start with a one-on-one meeting to understand your goals. Our dentists, Dr. Nicole Khalife and Dr. Anthony Leonetti, assess your facial features and discuss your concerns. We take photos and map out injection sites tailored to your needs.
We explain how Botox works and what results you can expect. Our team answers all your questions about the treatment. We also review your medical history to make sure Botox is safe for you.
Step-by-Step Botox Injection Procedure
On the day of your treatment, we clean the injection areas. We may use a numbing cream to keep you comfortable. Our dentists then inject small amounts of Botox into specific facial muscles.
The injections take about 10-15 minutes. We use very thin needles to minimize discomfort. After the injections, we give you an ice pack to reduce swelling. We provide care tips to follow at home.
You can return to normal activities right away. The full effects of Botox usually appear within a week. We schedule a follow-up visit to check your results and make any needed touch-ups.
Post-Botox Care and Results
We want you to have the best experience with your Botox treatment at Lux Smiles. Proper care after your procedure is key to achieving great results. Let’s go over what you can expect during recovery and how long your Botox results will last.
Expected Recovery and Aftercare Instructions
Botox recovery is usually quick and easy. Most people can go back to their normal activities right after treatment. But there are a few things to keep in mind:
- Don’t rub or massage the treated areas for 24 hours
- Stay upright for 4 hours after your injection
- Skip intense exercise for a day
- Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, and vitamin E for 24 hours
These simple steps help the Botox settle in the right spots. You might see some tiny bumps or redness at first, but this goes away fast.
We’ll give you detailed instructions after your treatment. If you have any questions, just give us a call.
Longevity of Botox Results
Botox results usually last 3-4 months, but this can vary. Some factors that affect how long your results last include:
- Your age and skin type
- The areas treated
- How much Botox was used
- Your facial movements
You’ll start to see changes in 24-48 hours. The full effect kicks in after about 2 weeks.
To keep your results looking fresh, we recommend follow-up treatments every 3-4 months. This helps maintain that smooth, youthful look you love.
At Lux Smiles, we’re here to help you get the best Botox results. We’ll work with you to create a personalized treatment plan that fits your needs and goals.
Additional Cosmetic and Therapeutic Uses of Botox
Botox goes beyond smoothing wrinkles. This versatile treatment offers many cosmetic and medical benefits.
Botox for Treating Medical Conditions
We use Botox to help with several health issues. It can stop excessive sweating, a problem called hyperhidrosis. Many people find relief from chronic migraines with Botox injections. The treatment can also ease jaw pain from teeth grinding.
Botox helps with muscle spasms and eye twitching. Some doctors use it for overactive bladder. It can even treat crossed eyes in both kids and adults.
We’ve seen great results using Botox for these medical problems. It’s not just for looks – it can really improve quality of life.
Combining Botox with Other Aesthetic Treatments
Botox works well with other cosmetic treatments. We often pair it with dermal fillers like Juvederm for fuller facial rejuvenation. This combo smooths wrinkles and adds volume.
Botox can enhance the effects of laser treatments and chemical peels. It relaxes muscles to maintain results longer. Some people get Botox with lip fillers to fix a gummy smile.
We might suggest Dysport as an alternative to Botox. It’s another type of neuromodulator that works similarly. Combining different treatments gives the best outcome for each patient’s unique needs.
