Tooth Cavity Treatment NYC
Cavities are very common but luckily they are preventable and treatable!
Cavities can result in tooth loss, which can lead to severe oral complications. For this reason, learning how to catch them, prevent them, and treat them is important. Our dental professionals, including Dr. Steven Davidowitz, hold a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, ensuring they are highly qualified to provide the best care.
Causes
- Improper brushing and flossing
- Poor overall oral hygiene
- High sugar and starch content in diet
- Smoking and drug use
- Low fluoride
- Dry mouth
Dental Filling Treatment
Your dentist may recommend a couple of options based on the size of your cavity. For smaller cavities, a dental filling procedure using tooth colored fillings may be installed. Composite fillings offer both aesthetic and functional advantages, blending seamlessly with the natural color of your teeth, providing durability, and ensuring safety by not containing metals like mercury. This process involves a composite material that replaces the decayed tooth to improve health, functionality, and appearance of the affected and surrounding teeth. Larger cavities may require a dental crown to surround and protect the affected tooth after the decay has been removed.
Prevention with Proper Oral Hygiene Routine
- Maintain a proper oral hygiene routine including good brushing and flossing techniques
- Eat a balanced diet and lower sugar and starch intakes
- See your dentist for regular checkups/cleanings

What Are Cavities?
Definition and Explanation
Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are areas of tooth structure damaged by bacterial acid. They form when harmful bacteria in the mouth produce acids that erode the protective enamel layer of the teeth. If left untreated, cavities can progress and cause more significant damage to the tooth, leading to pain, infection, and potential tooth loss.
Types of Cavities
There are several types of cavities, including:
- Pit and fissure cavities: These occur on the chewing surfaces of teeth, particularly on molars and premolars.
- Smooth surface cavities: These occur on the smooth surfaces of teeth, often between teeth or on the front and back surfaces of teeth.
- Root cavities: These occur on the roots of teeth, often below the gum line.
- Recurrent cavities: These occur around existing dental fillings or other restorations.
Cavity Symptoms
Common Signs and Symptoms
Recognizing the symptoms of cavities is crucial in seeking timely dental care. Common signs of cavities include:
- Tooth sensitivity: Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures, sweet or sour tastes, or pressure.
- Toothache: A sharp or dull pain in the tooth, which can be constant or intermittent.
- Visible holes or pits: Small holes or pits in the teeth, which can be visible to the naked eye.
- Discoloration or staining: Discoloration or staining of the teeth, which can be a sign of tooth decay.
- Pain when biting or chewing: Pain or discomfort when biting or chewing, which can be a sign of a cavity.
How to Identify a Cavity
Identifying a cavity can be done through a combination of visual examination, X-rays, and other diagnostic tools. Your dentist may use a variety of methods to detect cavities, including:
- Visual examination: A visual examination of the teeth to look for signs of decay or damage.
- X-rays: X-rays to detect decay or damage that is not visible to the naked eye.
- Probing: Probing the teeth with a dental instrument to detect any soft or decayed areas.
- Dental imaging: Dental imaging techniques, such as digital X-rays or intraoral cameras, to detect cavities and other oral health issues.
