In his studies at the Mount Sinai Icahn School of Medicine, he focused on cosmetic procedures and implant dentistry. Keep reading to learn more about his background and education.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?

Throughout college, Dr. Ruhrkraut had been interested in the field of medicine until he decided to switch gears and focus more on dentistry. This was due to his participation in a mission trip to Honduras in 2011, where he assisted a dentist there and resumed shadowing him back in the United States. After learning much more about the wonderful opportunities that dentistry offered while also helping to improve a patient’s overall quality of life, he set himself to pursue a life as a dentist!

Where Did You Study Dentistry?

Dr. Ruhrkraut attended The Ohio State University for his bachelor’s degree before studying at their College of Dentistry to earn his dental doctorate. Throughout his years as a general dentist, he’s enjoyed the flexibility it’s given him to provide a holistic plan and various treatments to his patients. He’s worked in multiple offices in New York City and Los Angeles, and he’s gained extensive knowledge and skills in multiple types of services, including root canals, crowns and bridges, dental implants, cosmetic dentistry, and Invisalign. He also regularly seeks continuing education to remain on top of the latest advancements in dentistry, and he’s also an active member of the American Dental Association and New York Dental Association.

Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?

Aside from treating pearly whites, Dr. Ruhrkraut loves to return to his hometown of Cleveland, OH to visit his parents and loved ones several times a year whenever he gets the chance. Away from the office, he enjoys cooking, reading, watching movies, playing volleyball, and traveling. One fun fact about him: he’s an Eagle Scout and received the Triple Crown Award after canoeing, hiking, camping, and sailing in three national high adventure programs.

What Causes a Cavity?

Cavities are small holes in the teeth that typically form when sugar particles in your mouth combine with bacteria. That combination creates plaque, which eats away tooth enamel and causes tooth decay. Some main culprits of cavity formation are failure to maintain good oral hygiene, eating and drinking sugar in excess, acid reflux, and smoking.

How Dental Fillings Treat Cavities

During the dental filling procedure, your dentist drills into your tooth to remove the decayed portion. This removal helps prevent the tooth from further damage and future infection. The dentist then inserts the filling into the cavity to replace the decayed area and prevent the infection from spreading.

Dental fillings strengthen the tooth, as the hole previously presented structural integrity issues. They will also relieve the pain caused by the cavity while restoring your smile to its natural appearance.

Dental Filling Materials

Dentists use several different dental filling materials, including:

Composite Fillings

Composite is the most common material for dental fillings because it can match the shade of your teeth, resulting in the most natural look. Composites are also popular due to the lack of drilling required relative to the other materials. Composite fillings bond directly to the tooth rather than simply filling the hole, so you’ll lose less of the healthy portion of your tooth.

Amalgam Fillings

Amalgams are metal mixtures used for dental fillings. Since the metal expands and contracts with varying temperatures, amalgam fillings can fracture the surrounding tooth. Amalgam fillings are also known to cause more tooth sensitivity than composite material, and they won’t be able to match the hue of your teeth to provide a natural appearance.

Gold Fillings

Like amalgam fillings, gold fillings are a mixture of several metals. These fillings also expand and contract at different temperatures, creating the risk of a fracture. Gold is probably the most durable filling material, but it comes at a higher price.

At Lux Smiles, we only use high-end dental filling material that is both safe and effective. Our dental professionals will discuss your options with you to determine which solution is best for your oral health and budget.

Additional Information on Tooth Fillings in NYC

We’ll start your appointment by freezing your mouth to ensure your comfort. Next we prepare the tooth and make sure we get rid of any built up bacteria. We will then apply the composite resin that has been colour matched to the rest of your teeth. It will be hardened using a special light, and then contoured to fit amongst your other teeth.
