Fully Maximize Your Dental Benefits

About Dental Insurance

Dental insurance is an excellent tool that can help to make your dental care much more affordable for you and your family. If you have access to a dental plan through your employer or by another means, this is definitely something to take advantage of. However, dental insurance works a bit differently than the medical insurance that you’re used to, so it can be challenging to navigate at first. To benefit from your plan, it’s crucial that you are taking all of the necessary steps to maximize your benefits. To learn more about dental insurance, continue reading. If you have any questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to give us a call.

How Dental Insurance Works

When you pay your monthly premium, you gain access to discounts on dental treatments and procedures. Every plan works a little bit differently, but here is what you can generally expect in terms of savings:

  • Preventive dental treatments are usually covered at 100%. This includes things like checkups, cleanings, and X-rays.
  • Basic restorative procedures are usually covered at about 80%. This includes dental fillings.
  • Major restorative procedures are usually covered at approximately 50%. This includes things like dental crowns and dentures.

In most cases, cosmetic procedures are not covered by dental insurance because they are considered elective. The idea is that by attending your cleanings and checkups, you can prevent the need for restorative treatments in the future, which aren’t covered at as high of a rate. However, there are still several key things to remember:

  • Dental insurance plans are generally renewed at the beginning of the calendar year. Benefits do not carry over.
  • You need to meet your deductible before your coverage kicks in.
  • Your annual maximum is the designated amount of money provided by your insurance company. It is the most they will agree to pay out in a single year. If you don’t reach this amount, the remaining balance is returned to your insurance company.

What Is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

Medical insurance and dental insurance seem like they would be similar, but they have quite a few differences. The biggest one is that dental insurance is focused more on preventive care. That’s why most plans include complete coverage for cleanings and checkups. This way, patients can avoid more complex procedures, like root canals and tooth extractions.

What's the difference between in-network and out-of-network dentists?

What treatments will dental insurance cover?

What's the difference between a PPO and HMO plan?

There are two main types of dental insurance plans: PPOs and HMOs. PPO stands for “Preferred Provider Organizations, while HMO stands for “Health Maintenance Organizations,” and the type of plan you have will determine who you can visit.

PPO plans often have higher monthly premiums and annual maximums, which means that they cap off how much they will cover for your dental treatments in a year. These plans allow patients to see any provider they want and access their benefits by filing a claim for the services they receive, which means that patients have the power of choice. On the other hand, HMO plans typically have lower premiums and deductibles, but they require patients to see an in-network provider, meaning they have less choice in who they’re able to see.

Our team at Lux Smiles is happy to accept most major PPO plans, which means we can file claims on your behalf to ensure you receive the maximum reimbursement amount and coverage for all of your treatments.

How many dental checkups and cleanings will dental insurance cover in a year?

Dental insurance typically covers 100% of the cost of two dental checkups and cleanings a year, including routine X-rays of the mouth to check for abnormal growths, cavities, and other underlying dental concerns.

Will dental insurance cover the cost of dental implants?

This really depends on your individual dental insurance plan, since every plan’s coverage is different. In many cases, dental insurance will cover one or multiple portions of the dental implant process, like the creation of the replacement teeth. However, there are often several aspects of the treatment that aren’t covered, like the implant placement surgery itself. Our team will give you a detailed cost estimate of your dental implant process before you agree to move forward with it so you know exactly what to expect financially. We’re also happy to file claims with your dental insurance provider to make sure any possible coverage is accounted for.

Will dental insurance cover the cost of Invisalign® aligners?

If your dental insurance plan includes orthodontic coverage, it’s likely that they will cover a portion of your Invisalign treatment. However, the only way to know for sure is to call your insurance provider directly and ask.

Why Did You Decide to Become a Dentist?

Throughout college, Dr. Ruhrkraut had been interested in the field of medicine until he decided to switch gears and focus more on dentistry. This was due to his participation in a mission trip to Honduras in 2011, where he assisted a dentist there and resumed shadowing him back in the United States. After learning much more about the wonderful opportunities that dentistry offered while also helping to improve a patient’s overall quality of life, he set himself to pursue a life as a dentist!

Where Did You Study Dentistry?

He also regularly seeks continuing education to remain on top of the latest advancements in dentistry, and he’s also an active member of the American Dental Association and New York Dental Association.

Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?

Aside from treating pearly whites, Dr. Ruhrkraut loves to return to his hometown of Cleveland, OH to visit his parents and loved ones several times a year whenever he gets the chance. Away from the office, he enjoys cooking, reading, watching movies, playing volleyball, and traveling.
